If you never use the Dashboard in Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger), don't be afraid to kill it. In Tiger, go to System Preferences -> Keyboard & Mouse -> Keyboard Shortcuts and select "All controls" at the bottom or press ^F7 (Control-F7) to toggle this setting. If you're not a big fan of the mouse, consider flipping on "Full keyboard access." This means you can use the tab key to focus buttons and panes, not just text fields. GeekTool is also a way of life, in addition to being a nice Dashboard replacement. Namely is exclusively an application launcher and is a lighter weight alternative to LaunchBar or Quicksilver. It also has sweet visual effects and it is FREE. Quicksilver is a more configurable and extensible application similar to Launchbar. It even "learns" the keyboard combinations you use to launch particular program for example, you can train it to launch Firefox whenever you press Cmd-space then "F" then return. You can use it to find and play songs quickly and navigate folders. Hit Cmd-space and start typing the name of a program, document, folder, URL you've visited, or a song, and it brings up a list of matches almost instantaneously (even faster than Spotlight).

Zotero might be better choice for this.Synergy is a neat little program for controlling iTunes while another program is in the foreground. NOTE: Calibre is IMO not that good for research papers although YMMV. I am sure its comming one day or you can implement samo mumbo-jumbo on your own. The only thing it doesn't have is in text search, but hey. Catalog your books, movies, music, software, toys, tools, electronics, & video games in a nice interface. Anybody not using it simply doesn't know better. Simply, there isn't anything better out there.

along with my own classification on books that isn't merged with online stuff and is kept separatelly. I have personal tags such as `reading`, `must read` etc.
You can both have online tags applied and your own tags. Awesome converter from-to number of formats You can have different libraries, groups, virtual libs etc. Audiobooks could be handled better but ok. It supports zillion formats, and basically you can add zip or anything. You can share via web server and access lib from browser and even add books from browser or simply copy them to special folder You can add arbitrary metadata and give them types (bool, text, urls.) It first uses cover of the book (first page in PDF, epub etc), downloads covers if there aren't any, or generates them if nothing can be found Without ISBN it will search by given criteria You can scan books for ISBNs and get certain 1 on 1 match online without any effort or search foo. You can make plugin for any magazine (python) including self-published
